About us

Nerdtronics is an innovative development company based on Koh Phangan Island, Thailand.  We provide Consulting, Research and Development for pretty much everything that's electronics, with a focus on Embedded computer systems and networking technologies.

The Nerdtronics team covers all qualifications, from project planning and hardware and software development to the finished product.

The founders of Nerdtronics originally started related activities in Germany more than 25 years ago.  These days, we are working with a team that is distributed all across the globe. And since early 2025 we have started building our head office on Koh Phangan.

Business Location & Establishment

Nerdtronics is incorporated in Thailand, with the registered office on Koh Phangan Island.

The reason for this location is that the island is very popular with international Expats who are residents on the island. The business is also supported by skilled engineers from around the globe, providing their services remotely. In the mid term, a development and training center will be established, which will enable knowledge transfer between engineers from other countries and Thai nationals.

The decision to create an R&D company on Koh Phangan was done in late 2023. Due to limitations on what non-nationals are allowed to do, we took the very long route of applying for official support by the Thailand Board of Investment. At the end of 2024 we finally got the approval. Compared to other kinds of Thai Limited Companies run by foreigners, the official support from BOI brings huge benefits. Most importantly, all we do is 100% legal, and we do not need to operate in grey areas.

The Vision

The past has shown that team sizes for electronic and software R&D projects do not scale. Quite often a streamlined team of 5 developers can be more productive than a team of 50. This is due to the fact that high-skilled developers often have deficits in human interaction and communications. For individual work packages pair development does improve the quality of the output due to mutual checking for errors. Once more than three persons are working on a single problem, performance goes well down.

This means that the Nerdtronics is not going to be a big employer, but a source of constant innovation, producing skilled engineers and Intellectual Property held in Thailand.

On a long-term perspective we are considering to either buy (and remodel) or to build a combined office, R&D and training center on Koh Phang island.

To sum this up: We are planning to build a competence center for embedded electronics that will benefit all parties involved and will provide value to Thailand in the form of skilled labour and intellectual property.

Management and Ownership

The company is owned and managed by Simon Kissel and Frauke Bönsch. Simon and Frauke are married for over 25 years. All the time, both had their own businesses running in Germany, helping each other when needed.

Simon

Simon has been programming since early childhood. At the age of 17, he opened a computer repair shop. In 2000 he founded a company providing online messaging services. In 2006, he invented the concept of "WAN Bonding", filed patents for it, and founded a company producing Enterprise-grade Routers. Since 2011 with his company Nerdherrschaft he is also offering custom hardware and software development in Germany.

At Nerdtronics, Simon is serving as CEO and head of R&D, overseeing projects from start to finish.

Frauke

Frauke is an award-winning freelance photographer specialized in people, editorial and advertising photography. As a lecturer for staged photography at the University of Applied Sciences Mainz, she has conducted seminars.

Frauke founded her own studio in 2017, doing business-, fashion- and product photography.

At Nerdtronics, she is in charge of design, sales and marketing.

We love Thailand

Bringing intellectual property to Thailand

According to the WIPO IP Statistics data center, the global rank of patents filed from Thailand in 2021 was #43. For the last 10 years there has been hardly any growth in patent applications per year. Out of the roughly 1500 applications filed per year, only 4.2% have been in the field of eletronics. The majority of applications is in the field of chemicals.

It’s important for Thailand to improve its global position in ITC innovations, reflected in part by patent holdings, which serves as a key metric to investors. A better position in this field will attract further investments.

Multiple patent applications are already planned for the first year of business.

Knowledge transfer to the local community

Simon has proven to be very effective in enabling developers who are hard to integrate into typical corporate structures. Nerds who have a genius-like talent when it comes to innovating, often have shortcomings in their social skills, causing them not to perform well in typical corporate scenarios.

Support of Thailand ecosystem and administration

As the name “embedded electronics” implies, developments done by Nerdtronics typically will be an embedded critical part of a larger project run by a third-party. Often it is those tiny embedded components that are blocking big projects. This is where Nerdtronics comes in!

Due to this, even with Nerdtronics being a very small organization, it will enable innovations and new markets for existing Thai corporations. A small embedded electronic device created by a team of five local Nerds may enable new industrial applications and support hundreds of new jobs in Thailand.

The key merit to the project as seen from the perspective of the Thailand Board of Investment is that the company will be acting as a multiplicative incubator for existing Thai industrial corporations and the public sector.
